Radical Repentance
It seems like almost every other week a well-known athlete, actor, politician or religious
leader is sitting in front of a packed press conference tearfully giving a heartfelt apology
about something terrible he or she has done. Although maybe they should be commended
for their willingness to confess their “shortcomings”, I have to say that I’ve become more
than a little cynical about the sincerity of these “confessions”. This is especially the case
when more often than not, the individuals return to the same behaviour after the media dust
settles. Two questions that come to mind when I watch these stories unfold are (1) are the
individuals involved truly sorry? and (2) will they truly change? In other words, did they truly
repent?
