Hope of the City Serving Opportunities

6/07/2022 12:00 am - 31/08/2022 11:59 pm

At Hope of the City, our vision is to see a unified community where relationships are restored and hope is renewed. We believe it can be achieved by building authentic relationships with the underprivileged communities. Relationships are formed through intentionality, vulnerability and commitment, so we are looking for individuals who have a heart to offer their time, their patience and their skill sets to bless the poor. Below are a range of serving opportunities where you can forge new friendships and journey alongside one another.

English Corner for Top Class Ladies

Dates: July 6 to August 17 (Wednesday)
Time: 9:30am - 11am
Location: Sham Shui Po
Language Requirement: Native English

We have a group of ladies attending our Top English classes and we would like to provide more exposure for the ladies to help build up their confidence and feel comfortable in speaking English. We are looking for native English speakers who would like to spend time asking questions and creating conversations about life, hobbies and family. Topics and games will be provided, and volunteers are encouraged to simply be open to chat, be present and be patient in listening and encouraging the ladies. Volunteers are welcome to join one or more sessions depending on their availability.

NTK Monthly Elderly Home Visitation

Dates: August to January 2023 (Saturday)
Time: 3pm – 5pm
Location: Ngau Tau Kok
Language Requirement: Cantonese
Volunteer Training Date & Time: August 7 (Sun) at 1:30pm to 3:30pm
Volunteer Training Location: 10/F Classroom, Island ECC

With the help of St. James Settlement, we got to know a group of elderly living in Ngau Tau Kok (NTK). Due to COVID-19, the elderly have been socially distancing themselves from the community, and our hope is to reconnect with them through monthly home visitations. Volunteers will be paired in groups of 2-3 to visit the same elderly household one Saturday per month on scheduled visit dates, for 6 months in each round of commitment. After that, there will be an evaluation to see whether elderly and volunteers are interested in continuing to build the relationships. There will be some days assigned for group outings for all volunteers and the elderly to parks or restaurants where the visit time will be different. Volunteers will be required to attend a volunteer training in August. We understand that home visits may get daunting at times when there are questions or words that we may not know how to respond to. And sometimes there might be moments when volunteers want to know how to encourage the elderly. We would like to pack the proper tools to all volunteers before we set off on this wonderful journey.

Superbook Bible Camp

Dates: August 16-19, 23-26 (weekdays)
Time: 9:30am - 12:30pm
Location: Sham Shui Po
Language Requirement: Cantonese

We are partnering with Superbook to help organise an eight day summer vacation bible school for kids between the age 4 to 12 during their summer break in August. We are looking for volunteers who can help facilitate small group time which will include arts & crafts, Q&A and personal encouragement time. There will be an in-person mandatory training session on August 6 for volunteers to attend prior to the start of the summer camp.

Mentors for the Youth's ALTR Programme

Date: November 2022 – February 2023 (tentative)
Time: 7:30pm - 9:30pm
Location: Sham Shui Po
Language Requirement: Cantonese

In June, we kicked off our three-month youth career exploration and skill development programme called the ‘altR’. This programme is designed to offer exposure for the youth to learn and engage with different career opportunities. Our hope is to kick-off with a second batch of youth and mentors in the fall around November (tentative). We are recruiting mentors who have a heart to journey alongside with the disengaged youth, and offer career coaching and support in character development as they navigate different career options and acquire skill sets. The youths may encounter setbacks or self-doubts along the way, and our hope is to have mentors who can befriend the youth and alter their trajectory to a path of hope.
