Jeremiah - Reluctant Prophet
Jeremiah is the longest single book in the Bible (apart from the Psalms). Complex in construction, it contains both prophetic, historical, biographical, and dramatic literature. Jeremiah lived through the last years of the southern kingdom of Judah during the chaos of a constantly deteriorating spiritual and political situation and the rise of Babylon. Called by God probably when he was still a teenager, Jeremiah was passionate in his prophesies and yet deeply conflicted as to his role as a prophet proclaiming God’s judgment upon his people. Worn down by opposition and isolation, heroically, he continues to preach at great danger to himself, suffering beatings, imprisonment, and near death, finally being carried off against his will to Egypt, after having refused safe passage to Babylon.
In this course, we will explore Jeremiah’s prophecies and confrontations, his confessions and complaints to God. In doing so, we get a practical appreciation of what it means to persist in service to God despite doubts and difficult circumstances, especially when the outcome of God’s revelation seems so delayed.
Who is it for: Anyone who wants to understand one of the great books of prophecy and what it meant and means, and how we can practically apply it as we live out the gospel in a difficult world.
