Hope October

19/10/2020 12:00 am - 31/10/2020 11:59 pm

This year marks the third Hope October and Hope of the City has witnessed how our neighbours in Sham Shui Po are longing to be seen, known and in companionship. We believe that as a church, our response is to be imitators of Christ and walk alongside our neighbours who are often overlooked. Our heart is therefore to provide opportunities for you to deepen relationships with our neighbours through serving one target group consistently over the span of a few weeks in October.

We hope this would be a launching pad for you to serve the community regularly, with the aim of cultivating companionship and witnessing real community transformation as you intentionally journey alongside our neighbours.

Children
Since Covid-19 came to Hong Kong, many children from lower-income families were stuck at home in tiny, subdivided flats. Living in close proximity can take a toll on their relationships. We need volunteers who are enthusiastic and passionate about engaging children through fun and interactive online activities via Zoom, and who have a heart to be ministers of reconciliation and peacemakers for these families.

Dates: Saturdays, October 3, 17 and 31

Youth
This year has been challenging for young people, especially youth struggling with wounded hearts and a sense of despair and helplessness towards the future. We believe Christ-following brothers and sisters who have a desire to journey alongside these youth can be a beacon of hope that points them to the One who is our Helper and Everlasting Hope. Volunteers will be paired up with a youth to plan, design and launch a social media project together with the intention of challenging and championing them into their God-given potential.

Dates: Sunday, October 4, and Saturdays October 10 and 31

Street Cleaners
Many street cleaners work tirelessly and are often overlooked and under-served in our city. Most of these workers are elderly who are committed to continue working instead of receiving financial aid from the government. Our hope is to demonstrate God’s love by reaching out to and loving our neighbours who serve behind the scenes. Volunteers will be visiting refuse stations to engage in conversations with street cleaners with the intention of building a friendship.

Dates: Saturdays, October 3, 10 and 24 in Sham Shui Po
Dates: Saturdays, October 3 and 31 in North Point

Homeless
Street sleepers are scattered across Hong Kong and society may have a skewed perspective towards this community. We hope to equip you to take the next faithful step to see the homeless the way God compassionately sees them, and to love the homeless radically as Christ loves us. Participants will hear personal stories from different perspectives including social workers, regular volunteers and the homeless themselves.

Dates: Sundays, October 11, 18 and 25

SSP Scavenger Hunt
The scavenger hunt is designed for newcomers who would like to learn more about what Hope of the City is doing in partnership with other organisations and churches. Participants will race to complete the tasks as they engage with social workers, staff and regular Hope volunteers scattered around Sham Shui Po.

Date: Saturday, October 24

Prayer Walk
We would like to invite volunteers to stand in the gap to intercede and pray for the city of Hong Kong, particularly for Sham Shui Po, the district Hope of the City has been committed to serving in this past decade. Join us on any of the following Wednesday nights for a time of worship and prayer.

Dates: Wednesdays, October 7, 14, 21 and 28
