Who it's for:
Anyone who wants to get deeper into the Gospels and Jesus' teachings.
There are times when we wonder, "What on earth was Jesus saying? Did he really say that? ". There are a large number of things he said which were, in his time and today, really difficult to understand, blunt and seemingly offensive, or otherwise just making overwhelming demands on his followers.
Can we afford to ignore them or explain them away? Obviously not! Our task is to understand them even if we are not comforted by them – after all it is sometimes said that Jesus came to comfort the disturbed and disturb the comfortable!
This three-week course delves into the language, cultural, and religious life of 1st century Palestine which lies behind all these sayings so that we can uncover what Jesus was truly saying, recover the challenge he was proclaiming, and discover that this challenge is still with us and very much part of our proclamation and mission as Christians.
