Recounting God’s Faithfulness for the Next Generation

Posted by Paika Liu on

This will be written for the generation to come, that a people yet to be created may praise the Lord. Psalm 102:18

This verse is part of the prayer of an afflicted man who is asking for mercy for himself and for God’s people. The psalmist cries out to the Lord to hear his prayer while also boldly declaring God will arise and have compassion on His people. He then says all these events will be written down so the next generation may also know of God’s faithfulness and greatness and praise Him.

This verse struck me as I was thinking about the issues we’re currently facing, both personally and on a global front, and about how they will impact the next generation. Each generation will no doubt face its own challenges. This verse reminds me that we can best equip the next generation by sharing testimonies of God’s faithfulness so they too will trust in Him and praise Him as their Lord.

Psalm 78, verse 4 also puts it this way: “We will not conceal them from their children, but tell to the generation to come the praises of the Lord, and His strength and His wondrous works that He has done.” In this psalm, the psalmist recounts God’s faithfulness in spite of His people’s rebellion. He is so bold to recount God’s faithfulness while recounting all the times God’s people rebelled and grieved God in order that the next generation may “put their confidence in God and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments.” (Psalm 78:7)

I am reminded to pray and think about the ways God has been faithful in my life and how I am passing this onto the next generation. I’m also convicted to reflect on the times I was sinful and unfaithful yet God was still faithful. And finally, I’m encouraged to know that when we are able to recount God’s faithfulness while admitting our own rebellion, future generations will come to praise the Lord.

Let us pass on God’s faithfulness to the next generation by:

  • Remembering and thanking God for the specific ways and times He has been faithful to you.
  • Praying for opportunities in which you can share God’s faithfulness in your lives with others so they too can know and put their trust in God.
