Fake News

Posted by Joseph Mohan on

But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them – bringing swift destruction on themselves. Many will follow their depraved conduct and will bring the way of truth into disrepute. In their greed, these teachers will exploit you with fabricated stories. 2 Peter 2:1-2

Turn on the news networks and chances are high that we will be blasted with an endless stream of fake news as well as allegations and defences voiced by opposing factions. Social media is no exception. It too is a breeding ground for misleading and inaccurate information. “Fake news” became part of our vocabulary in 2016. Fake news succeeds in confusing us – not knowing what to believe. Worse still, many believe fake news even if they are not credible.

According to Wikipedia, fake news is a type of yellow journalism or propaganda that consists of deliberate misinformation or hoaxes spread via traditional print and broadcast news media or online social media.

Relax! Fake news is not new, though it has gained a lot of traction recently. What about the fake news of the highest order propagated by the enemy of our soul? Does this sound familiar to you? “God does not exist;” “the Bible is unreliable; “there is no purpose to our existence;” or, “heaven and hell is a myth.”

Fake news of this category is birthed with a solitary goal: deliberate but disguised misinformation to undermine the good news of Jesus Christ. We ought to be armed with the Word of God to discern the truth from fake news so as not to be swayed by accusations and lies against the gospel of Christ. God’s good news will triumph over Satan’s lies and fake news: “And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” (John 8:32)

Let us respond to fake news by:

  • Thanking God for His Word that teaches, rebukes, corrects and trains us in righteousness.
  • Asking God to help us understand the importance of knowing Him to fight against lies we face.
