Essential Bread

Posted by Henry Mui on

Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty." John 6:35

It’s so easy to gloss over familiar verses of scripture. “Familiarity breeds contempt” as they say but that’s hardly an excuse when it comes to our relationship with Jesus.

Jesus responds to some critics who demand that He “prove himself” and give them bread from heaven, just like Moses. He goes beyond this proposition and lays down some kingdom theology that explains why He is so much more superior to any Christ-figure they could think of.

Jesus links himself to a fundamental truth that hunger is a primal urge and declares that He is the answer. Actually His metaphor transcends the physical to the spiritual and here He loses most of the crowd. It seems they were not willing to go as far as Jesus was taking the conversation. They left, no longer following Him.

Jesus asks the Twelve, “You do not want to leave too, do you?” Peter answered “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God.” Wow, if not to Jesus, where would we go? If we do not follow Jesus, we will follow somebody.

I have found myself in the place of Peter at certain crossroads of life where the journey just seems too much, the challenges too great, and my grasp of my Saviour too weak. I thank God that, in those moments, His grace draws me near to Him and it is His strength, His provision and His love that covers me. In those moments, Jesus’ gentle assurance and welcome comes flooding into my heart. He is essential to our very being.

Let Jesus be your essential bread by:

  • Taking time to pray, rejoice and meditate on how He satisfies your physical, spiritual and emotional needs.
  • Thanking Him for the Bold Faith Campaign where you witness His goodness, faithfulness and generosity to your family, your church all these years. Ask His help to pray for greater things for His name to be made known every moment.
