A Salute to Firefighters

Posted by Joseph Mohan on

“This is how it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come and separate the wicked from the righteous and throw them into the blazing furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” Matthew 13:49-50

In late June, a level-four-alarm fire swept through Ngau Tau Kok industrial building in Hong Kong. Responding to the 999 call, firefighters battled valiantly to save precious lives and property. According to media reports, the fire raged for more than 120 hours with temperatures inside the building rising to a few hundred degrees celsius. A total of 34 fire engines and 180 firefighters were deployed at the scene of one of the worst fires in Hong Kong. Indeed, these brave firefighters deserve our salute.

While firefighters do a heroic job of saving lives, they are helpless when it comes to saving people from the eternal fire that Matthew 13:50 warns of when it says, “The angels will come (at the end of the age) and separate the wicked from the righteous and throw them into the blazing furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”

Here is the deal: you and I are invited to do what the firefighters can’t. Our invitation is to, “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit…” (Matthew 28:19).

Are we not called to join the ranks of ‘Firefighters for Christ’ by sharing the good news and rescuing people from the eternal fire and death? There is nothing more rewarding than a successful, eternal lifesaving attempt!

Let us become firefighters for Christ by:

  • Praying that God would give us a deep burden for those who do not know Christ as their Lord and Savior.
  • Asking for God-given boldness to tell a person how his/her life can be saved by Jesus Christ.
