Go Beyond Meryl Streep

Posted by Sherman Chau on

Seems the word “Enough” is popping up a lot recently. Our latest GO magazine with the theme “What is Enough” hit the “shelves” (or seats, as it were) this past Sunday. And did you catch Viola Davis’ tribute to Meryl Streep at the Golden Globe awards?

Davis said Streep, who received the Lifetime Achievement award, made her proud to be an artist, and then followed it up with this: “You make me feel that what I have in me—my body, my face, my age—is enough.”

(There’s a lyrical cadence in Davis’ speech that you can’t catch by just reading it. Watch it—it’s worthy of an award itself.)

To take that thought a step further: those who believe, know that Christ is enough. The scripture verse behind the magazine’s theme is 2 Corinthians 12:9, “my grace is sufficient for you…” Yes, we are fearfully and wonderfully made, each with our own unique voice and design and gifting, but ultimately what we find in ourselves is not enough. Only when we come to the end of ourselves and find our sufficiency in Him do we discover the second truth in the verse: “for [Jesus’] power is made perfect in weakness.”

The Great Commission commands us to go. But sometimes we’re held back because we’re insecure. We think we need to have enough before we go: enough time, money, motivation, or support. The pivot is understanding that not having enough of our own strength is exactly where we need to be. Once we understand the beauty of grace, that is all we need, not simply to go; but to go beyond whatever limit we are facing. What we have in us is not a feeling, it is the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, and it is enough both to sustain and propel us.

Our Go Beyond Conference is coming up next weekend. We won’t have Hollywood celebrities there but we will have great guest speakers and a program that will certainly be enough.

Is there a boundary or limit that you’re facing? It could be a geographical limit in the sense of missions; it might be a personal, physical, emotional, or spiritual limit. Reword Corinthians 12:9 as a personal prayer and ask the Lord to show you the secret of His power.
