Why We Give

For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. (Matthew 6:21)

It's not a coincidence that Jesus spoke so much about our relationship with money. Perhaps more than anything else on earth, money fights for our allegiance and directly competes with our willingness to trust in God's provision.

Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on.”
(Mark 12:43-44)

When it comes to money in the Bible, we are likened to stewards; ones given responsibility to manage things that don't belong to them. It's an opportunity to worship God and see our personal finances as a tool to see God work.

Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.
(2 Corinthians 9:7)

Scripture is abundantly clear: God is not concerned about the amount we give! He wants us to give sacrificially and he wants us to give joyfully. At Island ECC we believe giving represents an opportunity to stretch our faith, see God perform miracles, and according to Malachi 3:10, it's a chance for us to test the goodness of God.
