Love Offering / Reaching the Unreached

How then will they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in Him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? - Romans 10:14

We celebrate Christmas today because of missions. We have holly, snow, mistletoe and Santa Claus as symbols of the holiday because the Gospel reached Europe through missions. But at one time, there was no Christmas in Europe and no knowledge of Jesus beyond Asia Minor (present day Turkey). So God had redirected Paul’s missionary journey with a vision of a man saying, “Come over to Macedonia and help us” (Acts 16:9). And the story of the birth of the Saviour spread throughout Europe, and eventually to us.

Today, 278 million people in the world have no believers among them, and no missionaries going to share the Good News with them. There are still many countries where people have never heard the name of Jesus or are not allowed to learn about Christianity.

This year’s Love Offering will be dedicated to reaching the unreached with the Gospel so that they too have a chance to celebrate Christmas, knowing the true reason for the season.

Devotion: Joy of Giving

The newly-formed churches of first-century Macedonia are amazing examples of generous giving and discipleship. In 2 Corinthians 8, Paul tells us that these new believers were facing severe trials and extreme poverty. Yet they not only gave under these circumstances, they gave beyond their means and even begged Paul for the favour of contributing to his missions work. Their giving provided relief for the poor and starving believers in Jerusalem, and supported Paul in preaching the Gospel to the Corinthians, just as he had to the Macedonians themselves not long before. The Macedonian believers were materially poor, but they gave with a wealth of generosity and abundance of joy as an expression of their love for Christ and how they became rich in Him. May we follow their example!
