There are a large number of things Jesus said which were really difficult to understand, were blunt or offensive, or made overwhelming demands: “Let the Dead bury the dead;” “Unless you hate your father, mother…you cannot be my disciple” And more besides! What did he mean? How did his hearers respond and how are we to respond? Our task is to understand them even if we are not comforted by them – after all, it is sometimes said that Jesus came to comfort the disturbed and disturb the comfortable!
In this short course, Martin opens up a way through the language, cultural, and religious life of 1st-century Palestine so we can uncover what Jesus was truly saying and understand the challenge of Jesus’ message “The Kingdom of God is at hand” which is the very center of our proclamation and mission as Christians.
Who it's for: Anyone who wants to understand more deeply the teaching of Jesus and the challenge of the Gospel to us as His followers.
