Who is this for?
Anyone who wants to get inside the more difficult sections of the Old Testament and work out what they mean for us today.

Description
What was so good about David; what went wrong (and so badly) after Solomon? Why were there so many “faithless” kings? How does this history fit with the Prophets: who were they, when did they live and who was God talking to through them? What, if anything, does this prophecy mean for us now?

The books of Samuel and Kings in the OT contain something in the region of 500 years of Israel’s history and it’s not a positive history at all: after Saul, David and Solomon, things slide downhill until
eventual destruction and exile. This dismal historical picture becomes far more intense when we read the prophetic books Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel and the Twelve through whom God speaks words of passionate admonition and dire warning throughout this period.

Some key points we will cover:

  • The faithfulness of God in the face of the faithlessness of the Covenant people - the character of God as revealed in Israel’s history and through the prophets
  • The parallel between Adam and Israel in rejecting the sovereignty and presence of God
  • How we understand prophecy as presented in the OT: how did they speak/act – how did the words get written down and how was/is prophecy fulfilled?
  • The relevance of all this to Christians of the 21 st Century?
