Description:
Christmas has become a favorite universal festival– but not because of the birth of the Messiah but because of all the children story, happy legend, excessive commercialism, fun, party, and decoration that wraps it all up in a sugar-sweet Disneyland adventure package. As such it has become tragically removed from the risky, harsh reality of the birth of the Messiah into a conflicted world. This course will be a great deal of fun as we uncover the fanciful embellishments of the Christmas story; it will bring some much needed clarity as we recover the actual events in our Gospels and, most importantly, deepen our faith as we discover the power of God and the faith, obedience and stunning humility of those chosen to serve Him despite the enormous odds stacked against them.
Session 1: Carols, Cards and a crisis - a good historical and critical look at the way Christmas has become so distorted and distant from the real birth story
Session 2: Tough times and unexpected visitors: A 1st Century fresh look at the birth story from Luke’s gospel - Great risk, obedience, and humility.
Session 3: A star-studded Journey: Persian astronomers, prophecies and lengthy dangerous travel – more revelations from Matthew – more risk, faith, and humility.
