Japan is a country that is known to be so materially rich but spiritually poor. With a population of 127 million, only 0.5% are Christian. Because Christianity is viewed as a foreigner’s religion and Christians being so few, there are very few opportunities for Japanese people to hear about the gospel and see Christ’s love in action. One of the reasons we would like to go as a church team is to demonstrate this love in action to the local community.
This will be the second time we will be sending a team from Island ECC to Japan. We will be partnering with a few local mission organizations and the work that they are already doing. Examples of some of the ministries we will be involved in (subject to changes as we are still working on the schedule with our local partners!):
- Mudout: helping in demolishing of interior of houses damaged by the tsunami and preparing them for carpenters to come in and re-furnish.
- Cookout: helping in the weekly cookout to the community
- Anniversary events: helping in the anniversary events in Ishinomaki on March 11th
- Encouraging local partners: bringing encouragement and prayer to local partners on the ground
- Outreach: being a part of the café outreach and talking to local residents over coffee or doing home visits during the time we are there to local families
